As your constituent, I would be grateful if you would write to the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander MP, in favour of the proposed policy to lower the legal drink-driving limit in England and Wales, in the forthcoming road safety strategy.

Deaths from drink-driving have increased over the past decade, and peaked in 2022 which was the highest level in 13 years. With England, Wales, and Northern Ireland still holding the highest legal limit in Europe at 80mg/100ml, it is clear that lowering the legal limit is needed to reduce road collisions and save lives, and the evidence shows why:

- Drivers with a blood alcohol content of between 50mg-80mg/100 ml limit are six times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to sober drivers.  
- Impairment of critical driving functions such as coordination, reaction time, and attention can occur at BACs as low as 50mg per 100ml.  
- Modelling by NICE suggests that lowering the limit could save over 150 lives per year in England and Wales.

According to the British Medical Association’s drink and driving consensus statement, the below recommendations will ensure the effectiveness of lowering the limit:

- A reduction of the legal drink-driving limit  
- A robust enforcement and public education framework to support the change 
- Mandatory post-offence alcohol awareness and treatment facilitation

A clear timetable for implementation, monitoring and evaluation, including the potential for further reductions
