Equality Act Petition

Equality Act Petition

The Equality Act (2010) protects people with certain characteristics against discrimination in the workplace and wider society but it specifically has a clause excluding people with alcohol dependence from its protections.

At Alcohol Change UK, we are campaigning to lift this discriminatory exclusion from the Equality Act, and reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by people with alcohol dependence.

Equality Act Petition

People with alcohol dependence face much too stigma and discrimination. One place this shows up is in legislation in the Equality Act where there is a specific clause to exclude people with alcohol dependence from its protections. This further stigmatises people with alcohol dependence and excludes them from vital protections that other people benefit from. Will you sign and share this petition to help us get rid of this discriminatory clause in the Equality Act?

Compared to discrimination law in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand – only Britain excludes alcohol dependence. This needs to change. The exclusion on the act means that people alcohol dependence can be prevented from getting employment, even if they have stopped drinking and are the best person for a job, or they can be dismissed without any effort to help them. People with experience of alcohol dependence deserve better.

The government tell us that the exclusion exists because alcohol dependence is “self-induced.” We strongly disagree. No one chooses to become dependent on alcohol.

The exclusion enhances discrimination and stigmatisation for people with alcohol problems and does not help people get the support that they need. For example, under current law, if someone asks their employer if they can take time off to attend an appointment for cognitive behavioural therapy for their alcohol dependence, the employer can say they cannot take time off because their condition is self-inflicted.

We are asking the government to lift the alcohol exclusion in the Equality Act to show a strong commitment to reducing the stigma experienced by people living with alcohol dependence, and to include them in the protections the Equality Act provides.
